LANSING – State Representative Vicki Barnett (D-Farmington Hills) today hosted members of the Therapy Choir at the State Capitol for a kick-off rally promoting March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. The Therapy Choir is an a cappella group composed of men and women recovering from traumatic brain injuries, mental illness and other disorders.
"It's an honor to welcome these men and women who have committed themselves to promoting a greater understanding of brain injury and other disabilities," Barnett said. "Because of the efforts of groups like the Therapy Choir, people across Michigan – including many of our own friends and family who struggle with these illnesses and injuries – now know the hope that knowledge and understanding provides."
The Therapy Choir has performed more than 150 times on their "Tour of Hope and Education." Their mission is to provide a therapeutic experience for choir members, raise community awareness of brain injury issues and to provide a positive source of entertainment. The Choir has recorded five albums and appeared in four PBS TV specials.
Barnett welcomed the Choir at the 10th annual rally in Lansing promoting March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. In addition to their performance, speakers at the rally included State Senator Gilda Jacobs (D-Huntington Woods) and Len McCulloch, Certified Brain Injury Specialist and Director of the Therapy Choir.
